21st annual women in family business conference

The focus of Women in Family Business XXI is understanding and governing your family business

The 21st Annual WFB Conference will be held from March 9th through March 12th at the Miraval Resort. We limit participation to 30 women in order to provide an intimate workshop, so get your RSVP’s and registration form in early to make sure you there are still spaces available.

One of the challenges that face most women (and men) in family business is how to assess how their business is doing—especially if you are not running the business!

Having a context for understanding the business, knowing what is reasonable to expect, determining what measures are most relevant are often not part of the “curriculum” of growing up in a business-owning family. The ability to evaluate the business financials, the strategic direction and the strength of leadership are three important tools for all family stakeholders.

These are also the concerns of Boards of Directors of family-owned businesses. Governance of the business is very different than being a member of the family or an executive in the business. The fiduciary responsibility that a board member holds (as does an executive or trustee) is a high level of ethical and legal responsibility. How does one find or become an effective board member? How does a family member or shareholder relate to the Board of the business? How can one elevate the effectiveness of a board that is not serving its stakeholders as well as it could?

The focus of Women in Family Business XXI is understanding and governing your family business. As always, we will address the issues that are facing participants and the topics of interest. In particular we will discuss:

  • ◀   How to review and understand financial reports
  • ◀   What is reasonable to expect from the executives running your business (family or not)
  • ◀   Does the business have a process for strategic analysis, planning and following a direction that increases the probability of sustainability?
  • ◀   What is the most productive relationship between shareholders and board members?
  • ◀   How to recruit and develop a board with independent board members
  • ◀   When should you have a full board vs. an advisory board or other forms of oversight?
  • ◀   How to become an effective shareholder or steward of the family business
