THE WOMEN IN FAMILY BUSINESS CONFERENCE XIV
by Leslie Dashew, Human Side of Enterprise
March 11-14, 2010 in Tuscon, Arizona
Family businesses are like planets or other celestial bodies that may or may not be in the same orbit. Syzygy occurs when three or more celestial bodies are aligned in the same gravitational system along a plane.
Similarly, when the components of family businesses, i.e. individuals, families and businesses are aligned, there is greater probability that harmony and prosperity exist. When any one of those “planets” falls out of alignment, everything is thrown out of balance and readjustment or realignment must occur.
To use another analogy: when your spine is out of adjustment, the body is unbalanced and pain can occur in all kinds of places! In family businesses, when the members are out of alignment, pain typically does occur all over the place!
Cars that are “out of alignment” ride poorly are inefficient and uncomfortable.
Need I say more?
Alignment is especially important in family businesses
- The vision of the future must be aligned among all of these parties
- The roles and strategies need to be aligned with the direction
- Expectations and performance need to be aligned to build trust
The 2010 WFB program will address
- How to tell if your systems are in alignment
- What to do to assure alignment
- How to deal with parties who are out of alignment
- And how to make sure you stay aligned within yourself.
